Dr. Ernest Baafi, a Research Scientist of CSIR-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI), Ghana is the winner of the maiden Scientific Excellence and Innovation Award, 2017.

His paper, “Exploitation of Genetic Potential of Sweetpotato for End-user Traits Improvement” was adjudged the best scientific sweetpotato paper for 2016. The announcement was made at the just ended 8th Annual Technical Meeting of the Sweetpotato for Profit and Health Initiative (SPHI) in Tanzania.

The award comes with a cash prize of US$500, a certificate and the opportunity to present his paper at the meeting. The announcement was made by the Deputy Director-General of the International Potato Centre and Chairman of the Award Committee, Dr. Hugo Campus.

The Scientific Excellence and Innovation Award is through a generous endowment established by Dr. Jan W. Low, a 2016 World Food Prize Laureate for the best sweetpotato scientific paper. The criteria for selecting the winner include originality of the paper, degree of innovation and potential impact of the research published, impact factor of the journal, number of readings, downloads and citations as assessed through Research Gate as well as collaboration with other institutions, assessed through the number of co-authors from different National Research Systems (NARS) or Advanced Research Institutions (ARIs). The Award was presented to him by Dr. Jan W. Low, 2016 World Food Prize Laureate in the presence of 83 participants from Africa, Europe, America and Asia.
